Books of 2024: THE AMBERGRIS TRILOGY by Jeff VanderMeer.
Up next! This series is how I'm bridging my current writing/revision project with the one on deck for my personal nano. They're both Weird Stories, but the one I'm working on now is Weird (genre), like VanderMeer, and the one I'm planning for November is going to be Weird (fungus), also like VanderMeer. I hope to get Driscoll vibes AND some New Book vibes out of this!

Do you have any recommendations for danmei novels that are at all like SVSSS in tone? Or MDZS?
I have already read TGCF, but while I enjoyed it, the extended downward spiral without as many mental breaks from cutting to happier times proved to me a bit much for me.
I also tried 2ha but bounced off it hard as the POV character is just too unlikable at the start (even knowing why he's like that courtesy of tumblr spoilers couldn't save the unpleasantness of his POV).
Iā€™m gonna be honest, I donā€™t think Iā€™ve read any book that quite hits the same spot as svsss while having similar quality. The only novel I can think of is thatā€™s similar in feel is Peerless Immortal Surrounded by Demonic Disciples, but the writing quality kinda sucks. Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know feels like it has a similar comedic tone to svsss, but thatā€™s about it with the similarities. For mdzs recs, First-Class Lawyer, Copper Coins by the same author, and Record of the Missing Sect Master comes closest. These have MCs that are most similar in personality to Wei Wuxian without also having that extended downward spiral with minimal breaks that you mentioned.
The thing about mxtxā€™s writing is that I think her most unique skill amongst the writers of cnovel Iā€™ve read with serious topics is her ability to weave humor into dark moments of the story to give reprieve from the pressure without completely breaking the momentum. A lot of stories either end up dropping the humor as the plot gets serious or adding too much humor, causing the somber moments to seem goofy and unserious. However, if you want stories that are mostly humorous with a few moments of somberness expertly woven in, then Iā€™d suggest Ascending, Do Not Disturb and The Times Spent in Pretense.

2024 reads / storygraph
The Sword of Kaigen
standalone fantasy set in a rural mountain village at the edge of an empire that still holds traditional values, with families of powerful water/ice magic warriors
follows a powerful young heir who begins to question his beliefs about the empire when a new boy comes to his village from the city
and his mother, a housewife who has tried to forget her youth as a warrior and vigilante in the city since she moved back home to a loveless marriage
when thereā€™s a violent attack on their village that theyā€™re unprepared for, everything changes, and she has to embrace her old skills to protect her family and people
#The Sword of Kaigen#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#Iā€™ve been meaning to read this for years and I finally got around to it! a really unique fantasy novel#I had always assumed this was ur average pre-industrial high fantasy and then was immediately hit with video games/tv in the first chapter#lmao. But overall (aside from the broader worldbuilding/politics) it is closer to the average ā€˜historicalā€™ fantasy narrative -#so I can see why I got that impression#Some really compelling characters and interesting narrative structure that went in some unexpected directions.#It really focuses in on one village and how devastating a single battle in a war can be to their people - and how much work the recovery is#I feel like most sff is more concerned with a single person and/or the whole war so this felt unique. did also mean that the pacing was odd#- it's a slow start; then thereā€™s a battle that must be hundreds of pages. The last section of the book feels a little too drawn out#and brings up random hanging plot elements that donā€™t really go anywhere. But I think overall this works for the story.#also one thing I didnā€™t love - cool complex interesting female character MC sure but also thereā€™s weird moments like:#the first scene we see her is all the housewives comparing their attractiveness; she keeps referring to herself as an old woman (when sheā€™s#and oh so meek and useless etc. And some of this feels like itā€™s part of the broader portrayal of the misogynist society#but some of it felt clunky or unintentional?#And then especially the end - when she and her shitty husband finally confront each other as equals and he apologises#she basically immediately forgives him and is like oh I was equally at fault because I am a meek woman who didnā€™t try either#like him realising he was wrong (and her realising he had a reason for being the way he was) doesnā€™t negate the fact that he treated her li#she acts like it was her fault for not trying too - when we have numerous examples of him berating her if she spoke up about anything?#like im glad heā€™s learning. but also that doesnā€™t mean she needs to suddenly forgive and love him wtf#that's the only real thing that annoyed me though.#also btw that 5yo seems kinda fucked up. are you guys gonna do anything about that

okay i have to say i am actually a strong defender of Snake That Makes You Evil. it sounds stupid on paper but thats only if u take it at face value? i do actually think the concept is crazy good what with the venom slowly corrupting how garmadon thinks about things and him being fully aware but unable to stop it.
its also not Just the venom that makes him evil. in the spinjitzu brothers books you can actively watch the fsm and wu andā€¦ really EVERYONE around garmadon become more and more wary of him despite not much really changing. it becomes a permanent blight on him that he is repeatedly told he needs to cure. but he hasnt really even changed in his own eyes
i personally prefer it to have been a pure fateful accident but the involvement of the overlord in the bite makes it arguably even more tragic. it becomes more than a childish mistake. garmadon was doomed from the moment he was born.

day 01/100 | one hundred days of books
i've spent this week reading ninth house, after finally getting my hands on it last november. i recall there being controversy when it was first released, but honestly, i still don't understand why it provoked so much anger. the book comes with its own undercurrents of anger, and with so much still unresolved i don't expect that to end any time soon, but there's also something cathartic in it, every time a man gets brutalised for his misogyny, every time alex gets to truly show who she is. this was definitely not an easy read, but it was a powerful one.

2, 3, 5, 7, & 20 for the Distracted asks, please?
2. Name something you want to read?
I've had the urge to dig into my collection of Oscar Wilde's fairy tales.
3. 5 songs you have been recently obsessed with?
I haven't had time for listening to much music lately, but I'm obsessed with the soundtrack to The Wild Robot. It made excellent background music when prepping the blog posts for the first day of the Inklings Challenge
5. What was the last thing you watched?
Already answered! It was an episode of The Drew Carey Show.
7. Draw something that makes you happy, don't worry about your art skills!
Edited to add: Snoopy!

20. Share a recipe or two?
How about my fancy oatmeal?
Melt a little butter in a kettle. Put in your steelcut oats and toast until fragrant. Put in four times as much water as oats, then let it simmer until it's the oatmeal consistency you want. While it's cooking, toast some chopped pecans and/or sliced almonds and gather any fruit you want (I usually use chopped apples and dried cherries, but I've also used fresh blueberries or raspberries). After the oatmeal's done cooking, stir in brown sugar, cinnamon, a bit of vanilla, and your nuts and fruit. Enjoy!

* I have already listened to a book by each of them this month (Bury Your Gays and I Was a Teenage Slasher respectively) but I really enjoyed both so I'm up for another.
These will all remain on my list so I'll get to them eventually, but I want to close out the month on theme and I can't decide.

omg hold on i just realized something!!!
the Blackbeak Matron is the ONLY one who knew about Manon's bloodline, like-- Manon is an actual fucking queen by birthright and the Matron is the only person who knew it because Manon never learned about this.
so remember when Asterin was telling Manon what happened to her with her hunter and witchling? The Matron warned Vesta and Sorrel not to bring it up to Manon or there will be dire consequences.
Now hear me out: Manon fucking loves Asterin. If she knew what her grandmother had done, she would have probably done something like take the Thirteen and just leave or something like that.
We all know how the Matron loved threatening Manon that she'd replace her, but while it worked on Manon, her grandmother never really intended to do that.
It's the same reason why she wanted Vesta and Sorrel to remain quiet: she has a literal fucking queen at her beck and call. Manon is ready to do anything for her grandmother just to get some praise, and the Matron isn't going to let go of that. It's why she needed Manon loyal to her (through fear because Manon didn't really trust her but she fears what she'd do)
So at the end of the day, the Matron was after more power. She kept Manon by her side through unorthodox tactics because she loved having so much control over her. And also because of Manon's royal blood, she can have so much.
I think it's also why she wasn't fully against Erawan showing interest in Manon. Because with that union, she will reign supreme.
It's just-- the way she played Manon for her whole life for no other reason than being a shitty person is what irks me the most. She literally used everything that is Manon and twisted it, turning it into something ugly.
I'm sorry but when Manon just killed Rhiannon without even questioning it? Just blindly obeying her grandmother because it's what she's been conditioned to do???
Later on, we see Manon really struggling between doing what is right and doing exactly what her grandmother wants even when she doesn't agree with it. Every time, her grandmother wins (until the part where she was about to execute Asterin) and I honestly think that the Matron was happy with how she has the actual Queen of Witches under her command.
#booklr#books and reading#throne of glass#manon blackbeak#tog#asterin blackbeak#empire of storms#kingdom of ash#queen of shadows#spoilers#hello i was just talking to myself about manon and I suddenly realized this???#the matron fucking orchestrated the whole thing#starting by killing her daughter and unleashing hell on her granddaughter#it's why she hates asterin#because she's probably the only person who can have power over manon#because manon actually loves her#and this whole thing irks the matron because she's anti feelings and she hates how despite all she did manon was still capable of loving#asterin (although she's terrible at showing this love but asterin bless her knows and she loves manon just the same)#anyway is there is a limit to how evil this woman is? probably not#she hurt manon so deeply-- starting with killing her parents then making her kill her sister without her even knowing it#constantly using asterin and the thirteen against her??#saying and doing everything that she said and done???#and my poor manon endured this for over a century like don't you get tired of this bullshit??? leave the girl alone for a change???#but no she she needed to torment her like this because that was how she controlled her#she's all about power and control and will stop at NOTHING to achieve this#this is why i say that manon is emotionally fragile#she's not aware of it because she never was allowed to feel it let alone name it and (god forbid) express it. like underneath it all she ha#so much hidden deep inside. i also feel like yrene will be the one to help her navigate those emotions and just... acknowledge them and#actually feel them. but this won't be easy at all because for over a hundred years it was drilled into her that this display is forbidden s#when those feelings come to the surface she'd try to push them down because it's a trauma response. she was never safe to feel or express
